"USDA Grant: Transforming Homes and Lives in Tahlequah"

Roof Repairs: A Critical Need

Jesse O’Kelly's home once faced a critical roof issue. Seven years ago, there were 3 spots on the roof that started leaking just 6 months after they bought the home. As he explained, "They were absolutely necessary because if we weren’t able to get them fixed in a timely manner then there was a lot more serious situation that could happen. Anything on the inside because of the water weight coming in could’ve collapsed the ceiling down. There’s a lot of things that could’ve happened if it hadn’t of been fixed on time." Thanks to the grant money, O’Kelly was able to get the roof fixed, and he emphasized, "I couldn’t have done it without their help fund wise."

Health and Safety Repairs: A Priority

Linda Cheatham, the executive director at Tahlequah Area Habitat for Humanity, stated that the grant will provide important health and safety repairs. These include roof and foundation issues, HVAC repairs, and even ramps. She said, "It makes a world of difference." There are requirements to receive the money, such as the project affecting the homeowner's health and safety, the owner having owned the property for at least one year, and an income requirement. Homeowners will pay back the repairs with an interest-free loan over several years.

Pending Projects and a Giving Tuesday Challenge

Currently, Tahlequah Area Habitat for Humanity has five pending projects for which the grant money can be used. They have also launched a Giving Tuesday challenge to fund other projects in the area.
