Resilience Amid Adversity: Gaza's Youth Persevere Through Crisis
Despite the devastating crisis unfolding in Gaza since October 2023, the region's young people are demonstrating remarkable resilience. With limited access to basic necessities like food, water, electricity, and medical care, coupled with the destruction of infrastructure and frequent displacement, the situation remains dire. Yet, through the efforts of organizations like Mercy Corps, these young individuals are finding ways to maintain their mental well-being, develop coping mechanisms, and lay the foundation for a brighter future.
Empowering Gaza's Youth to Overcome Adversity
Restoring a Sense of Normalcy
In the face of war, displacement, and the loss of community, children and young people in Gaza have had to find their own ways to maintain mental well-being and create coping mechanisms. Mercy Corps' Positive Youth Engagement program has been a beacon of hope, providing a range of support services to help strengthen mental well-being, build life skills, and open up opportunities for the future. Through wellbeing camps in Rafah, Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis, and Deir Al-Balah, the program has reached over 2,500 children and young people, along with 500 parents and caregivers, offering psychosocial support and basic education activities. One young participant shared, "It was my first time participating in an activity since the war started, and I felt very happy. It helped me forget about feeling stressed and scared every day." By providing a safe and supportive environment, the program has helped children and young people learn the collaboration and problem-solving skills needed to navigate challenges, build positive relationships, and thrive academically and personally.
Fostering Emotional Well-being
The Positive Youth Engagement program has also been instrumental in supporting the emotional well-being of Gaza's youth. Through sports and hands-on activities, the program has helped children and young people develop the tools to cope with and adapt to the emotional stress and challenges of conflict. As one caretaker in Gaza City reflected, "Sharing our experiences during those two days created a sense of support and safety amidst the fearful environment of war. I believe more sessions are necessary for our emotional well-being."By addressing the mental health needs of young people, the program has empowered them to better manage the trauma and anxiety that often accompany prolonged conflict. This holistic approach not only improves their immediate well-being but also lays the foundation for their long-term resilience and personal growth.
Adapting to Challenges
Delivering support and services to Gaza during this crisis has not been without its challenges. Mercy Corps has had to adapt its Positive Youth Engagement program to the current safety considerations and resource limitations. Working with local partners, the program has established a network of safe spaces in various locations, but ongoing conflict has severely affected these facilities, with many having been destroyed or repurposed as shelters for displaced people.Despite these obstacles, Mercy Corps has remained committed to supporting the youth of Gaza. The organization has worked closely with mentors and trainers who were previously involved in the program, leveraging their expertise and local knowledge to ensure the continuity of services. However, the strain on staff and participants continues, with limited access to fuel, communications equipment, and basic materials, as well as the ongoing displacement and unstable security situation.
Commitment to Long-term Recovery
Mercy Corps' work in Palestine spans nearly four decades, and the organization remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting communities as they cope with the current crisis and work towards recovery. Even in the face of immense challenges, Mercy Corps continues to use its voice, experience, and partnerships to deliver relief and aid to those in need.As the situation in Gaza remains volatile, the Positive Youth Engagement program may face further disruptions. However, Mercy Corps is determined to persevere, recognizing the vital importance of supporting the emotional well-being and personal development of Gaza's youth. By empowering these young individuals to overcome adversity and build a brighter future, Mercy Corps is not only addressing the immediate needs of the community but also investing in the long-term resilience and prosperity of the region.
