VIDEO | Schmidt Century Farm awarded Wisconsin Resilient Food Systems Grant
In a time of economic uncertainty, a family-owned farm in West Bend, Wisconsin, has received a significant boost to its operations. Schmidt Century Farm has been awarded a portion of a .1 million grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), through the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Program (RFSI).

Empowering Local Farms, Nourishing Communities

Unlocking Opportunities for Value-Added Products

The grant will enable Schmidt Century Farm to expand its capabilities and offerings. Deanna Schmidt, who attended the FEED Summit in Madison, learned about the grant opportunity and was pleasantly surprised to discover that farms like theirs could qualify for such funding. The Schmidts, who have been working the land for six generations, are now poised to take their farm to new heights. The RFSI grant will allow the Schmidts to purchase four pieces of commercial kitchen equipment, as well as an upgraded maple syrup evaporator. This investment will not only benefit their own farm but also support area farmers, bakers, and small food entrepreneurs in their endeavors. The new commercial kitchen will serve as a hub for value-added food product development, empowering local producers to diversify their offerings and reach new markets.

Cultivating a Vibrant Local Economy

The Schmidts' vision extends beyond their own farm. They are eager to use the grant funding to establish a new Schmidt Century Farm Store, which will provide a platform for selling their value-added products. This initiative aligns with their goal of educating their neighbors about the benefits of locally grown and produced foods."We want to help educate our neighbors in buying locally grown products that will be better for their bodies, minds and souls," said Deanna Schmidt. "It feels good to support our friends and neighbors and keep our local economy strong."The Farm Store will not only offer the Schmidts' own products but also serve as a showcase for other area farmers and small food businesses. By creating this community-focused marketplace, the Schmidts aim to strengthen the local food system and foster a deeper connection between producers and consumers.

Investing in the Future of Sustainable Agriculture

The Schmidts' commitment to their community extends beyond the Farm Store. As a leader of the Wayne Crusaders 4-H, Deanna Schmidt is excited to explore additional grant opportunities that can support farm research, education, and food resiliency initiatives."Some may ask 'why' we are doing all this, and I've seen firsthand that what you eat really does affect 80% of your body. Healthy eating is the core of having a healthy body," she said. The Schmidts' holistic approach to farming and community engagement reflects a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between agriculture, nutrition, and overall well-being. By investing in value-added products, infrastructure, and educational programs, they are not only strengthening their own farm but also contributing to the long-term sustainability and resilience of the local food system. As the Schmidts embark on this new chapter, their story serves as a shining example of how family-owned farms can adapt and thrive in the face of economic challenges. Through innovative partnerships, strategic investments, and a steadfast commitment to their community, they are paving the way for a more resilient and nourishing future.
