The deputy's statement reveals that Roetzel arrived at the victim's place on a small electric scooter, which he left near the roadside ditch before proceeding towards the garage. While the car owner's son was present in the garage, he swiftly entered the house to inform his mother that someone was approaching the driveway. When the son and his mother returned outside, they allegedly witnessed Roetzel inside the car, backing it out of the garage.

The deputy's report states that Roetzel stopped the car outside the garage, and then proceeded to strip off all his clothes before getting back into the vehicle and fleeing the scene eastbound on Highway 9. The sheriff's office later received a call from a citizen at the Kwik Star in Sibley, reporting a naked man in a silver Camaro putting air in a tire. Another Osceola County Deputy was able to locate and stop the vehicle on 170th Street and Golfview Drive, where they found Roetzel still inside the car, remaining in his unclothed state.
