Daring Carjacking Suspects Apprehended in Dramatic Pursuit
In a shocking turn of events, three individuals have been charged with a series of felonies following a brazen carjacking incident in unincorporated Downers Grove, Illinois. The suspects, Javari Williams, Tyray Hemphill, and Tremaine Nelson, are facing a slew of charges, including armed robbery with a firearm, aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, and aggravated vehicular hijacking of a victim over 60 years of age.
The incident unfolded on a Friday evening when the victim, who had arranged to sell his 2006 Silver Chrysler 300 SRT through the Offer Up app, met with a man claiming to be "Reyes." As the victim walked with the supposed buyer, the trio of suspects – Williams, Hemphill, and Nelson – arrived in a stolen 2006 Dodge Charger. The suspects then proceeded to hold the victim at gunpoint, threatening him with weapons pointed at his groin, head, and back, before stealing the victim's jewelry, phone, and car keys, all while ordering him not to move.
High-Speed Pursuit Ensues
Shortly after the carjacking, Downers Grove Police located both the stolen Chrysler and the Dodge Charger and attempted to stop the vehicles. This sparked a high-speed pursuit that led officers down Route 83, where the Dodge Charger ultimately crashed near Hinsdale. Four individuals exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, with three of them – Hemphill, Williams, and Nelson – eventually being apprehended by Hinsdale police after they scaled a fence.
Suspects Discovered in Residential Neighborhood
The fourth individual claimed to be a victim of the robbery and also fled the scene. However, officers were able to locate Nelson hiding in the window well of a nearby house, where they also discovered a loaded Glock 23 semi-automatic .40 caliber handgun. Hemphill and Williams were taken into custody in the vicinity, and two additional handguns were seized by the authorities.
Charges and Reactions
DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin expressed his relief that the victim was not physically harmed during the incident, stating, "The allegations that Javari Williams, Tremain Nelson and Tyray Hemphill violently robbed an innocent man of his car, pointing three guns at him, and tried to hide in a residential neighborhood, are frightening." He praised the quick apprehension of the suspects, which he said "demonstrates DuPage County law enforcement's commitment to public safety and willingness to work together to ensure the safety and security of all our residents."The three suspects, Hemphill, Nelson, and Williams, are currently being held in the DuPage County Jail and are scheduled to appear in court on October 28th, where they will face the charges stemming from this brazen and dangerous incident.
