The Delightfully Destructive Delivery Sim You Need to Play

When I went to a Konami preview event last August, I had my sights set on getting hands-on with the Silent Hill 2 remake and Metal Gear Solid Delta. Little did I know, the game that would captivate me the most was a surprise newcomer – Deliver At All Costs (DAAC), a chaotic, physics-based delivery sim from Far Out Games.

Buckle Up for Mayhem on the Roads

Delivering Destruction

Deliver At All Costs immerses you in the underachieving life of Winston Green, a brilliant but short-tempered engineer who takes a job at the local delivery company, Deliver At All Costs, to make ends meet. From the moment you hop into your rusty old beater, the game's fantastically destructible world comes to life. The environment is no obstacle, as you plow through parks, buildings, and pedestrians with reckless abandon. The town's inhabitants are remarkably resilient, able to withstand high-speed collisions with barely a scratch. But don't expect them to take your antics lying down – they'll come after you wielding bats and bent rebar, seeking revenge. This creates a delightfully chaotic feedback loop, as you wreak havoc, incur the wrath of the locals, and then have to escape their pursuit, all while still trying to complete your delivery.

Upgrading the Chaos

As you progress, you can enhance your vehicle's destructive capabilities through an extensive upgrade system. Rewards from side quests and hidden mechanical parts unlock increasingly baffling abilities, like full hydraulics and a functioning crane. By the time I finished the demo, my pickup truck was a formidable wrecking ball, capable of crushing everything in its path. The destruction you cause can even attract the attention of the police, leading to high-speed chases that further escalate the mayhem. Weaving through the crumbling cityscape, evading law enforcement, and continuing your deliveries is a delightfully chaotic experience.

Delivering the Absurd

The deliveries themselves are a constant source of hilarity and challenge. You might start out transporting fireworks that keep exploding, then move on to hauling loose melons that physics their way out of the truck, and eventually find yourself trying to transport a giant, flopping fish or a machine that spits out helium balloons. Each task requires you to navigate the destructible environment while keeping your cargo intact, leading to increasingly absurd and entertaining scenarios. The developers seem to have embraced the idea that the only limit to the ridiculousness is their own imagination, and they've run wild with it.

A Refreshingly Silly Romp

Amidst the high-stakes cinematic experiences of the Silent Hill 2 remake and Metal Gear Solid Delta, Deliver At All Costs stands out as a delightfully silly and creative romp. It's a game that embraces the pure, unadulterated joy of causing chaos and destruction, all while tasked with the humble job of making deliveries. The game's old-school, physics-based approach to gameplay and its commitment to embracing the absurd make it a refreshing change of pace. While the other titles on display at the Konami preview event may have offered more polished, narrative-driven experiences, DAAC's unabashed silliness and commitment to mayhem left a lasting impression.Deliver At All Costs may not have a confirmed release date yet, but it's definitely a game to keep an eye on for fans of chaotic, physics-based gameplay and unapologetic destruction. If you're looking for a delivery sim that's anything but ordinary, this might just be the game for you.
